The Rebirth of The Surf Club by Four Seasons
Once upon a time in the 1930's in the small seaside town of Surfside, Florida just north of Miami Beach, there was a private club on the ocean where the glitterati gathered. Winston Churchill, Frank Sinatra and Elizabeth Taylor mingled with other well heeled guests and danced the night away in the spectacular ballroom. Poolside fashion shows, debutante balls and black tie boxing nights were the norm. Fast forward eight decades...the property had fallen into disrepair and while it's history was iconic, the legendary Surf Club had faded from the limelight. Last April, The Surf Club was reborn as a Four Seasons Hotel. When I was in Miami in December, I had the pleasure of touring this gorgeous property as it has been re-envisioned by Four Seasons, architect Richard Meier and designer, Joseph Dirand.
The historic areas remain intact, having been carefully restored to their original grandeur, including the hotel entrance, Peacock Alley, the cabanas, and the stunning vaulted ceiling ballroom. The magnificent ballroom was divided to create Le Sirenuse Miami and Le Sirenuse Champagne Bar, the first ventures outside of Positano for the Sersale family, owners of famed Le Sirenuse.
The original cabana areas now house poolside cabanas for day use and the cabana guest rooms - the closest you can come to toes in the sand in South Florida. Modern towers for the hotel and residences were constructed above the original club.
The Four Seasons at The Surf Club juxtaposes the classic elegance of a bygone era, with meticulously detailed modern design...all combined with the top drawer service for which Four Seasons is known. Without question, it is destined to be the new "it" hotel in the Miami area...
